The main cost drivers
- Volume — how many cubic metres come out (and go back as fill). The core quantity behind a bulk excavation rate.
- Cart-away & disposal — trucking spoil off site and disposing of it to a licensed facility. Distance and tip fees matter, and classification matters more.
- Ground & rock — rock breaking is far slower and dearer than digging soil. Usually priced as a separate allowance until confirmed.
- Spoil classification & contamination — clean fill, category-classified or contaminated soil go to different facilities at very different rates. Flagged as provisional until the geotech confirms it.
- Groundwater — dewatering adds plant and time on deeper digs and basements.
- Access — tight, inner-city or sloping sites need smaller plant and more careful sequencing, which affects productivity.
- Retention — a basement needs shoring and often piling. Self-performing it (as we do) avoids a separate subcontractor markup.
