Rock Excavation & Breaking Melbourne
Rock excavation is the breaking, ripping and removal of ground too hard to dig with a standard bucket. It is where an excavation job either holds its price or blows it: Melbourne’s basalt plains, the mudstone of the eastern hills and the floaters buried through the northern suburbs turn a straightforward cut into breaker hours, slower load-out and heavier cartage — unless it was priced that way from the start.
YellowX reads the geotechnical report and prices the rock directly — classification, depth and extent — with excavator-mounted hydraulic breakers and heavy ripping on our own 20–35 t machines. The rate covers break-out, load-out, cartage and disposal to certified sites, so there is no “rock encountered” variation waiting in the covering letter.
What's included
- Hydraulic rock breaking with excavator-mounted breakers
- Heavy ripping of weathered rock and mudstone
- Bulk rock excavation and benching on sloping sites
- Trench rock for drainage and services
- Floater removal and splitting
- Rock load-out, cartage and disposal to certified sites
Where it fits in your program
Runs inside the bulk excavation or basement dig — sequenced so breaking and load-out overlap instead of stalling the program.
Plant we use
Compliance
- Rock priced off the geotechnical report — classification and extent called out in the BOQ
- Vibration and noise managed to council and neighbour conditions; monitoring priced as a provisional item where a sensitive structure adjoins
- Spoil tracked by docket to certified disposal sites
Rock Excavation — FAQs
How do you price rock?
Off the geotechnical report: classification, depth and extent, converted to solid cubic metres and breaker hours, plus cartage by the tonne. The BOQ states the basis and the assumptions so the number can be checked line by line.
How much does rock excavation cost per cubic metre in Melbourne?
As a guide (indicative, ex GST), breaking or ripping rock adds about $25–50 per m³ on bulk jobs, and small tight-access rock jobs run about $150–400 per m³. The geotechnical report — rock class, depth and extent — decides where a job sits, so the firm rate comes with the BOQ.
Do you crush or screen rock on site?
No. We break, rip, load and cart. On-site crushing and screening are not part of our scope.
What about vibration near neighbours?
Breaking is sequenced to the site’s conditions. Where a heritage or otherwise sensitive structure adjoins, vibration monitoring is priced as a provisional item so it is visible in the number from day one.
Can broken rock be reused as fill?
Sometimes — if the engineer’s specification allows it and it can be sized. More often it is carted to a certified site. We price the option that matches the specification.
